Cancer Zone Report June 2023

The Cancer Zone ran in June 2023 and was funded by MRC Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology, University of Oxford Department for Oncology, MRC Human Genetics Unit within the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh, Division of Cancer Sciences, University of Manchester, Manchester Cancer Research Centre and Beatson Institute.

The activity featured 28 scientists working across a broad range of fields.

28 scientists created profiles in the Zone. See who took part ❯

Students

435 students from 16 schools logged into the Zone.

95% of active students were from priority schools: 74% from underserved schools and 74% from widening participation schools.

Live Chats

45 Chats were booked. 29 took place.

On average, 4 scientists attended each live Chat.

What is I’m a Scientist?

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here is an online activity where school students get to meet and interact with scientists.

It’s a competition between scientists, where the students are the judges.

Students challenge the scientists over intense, fast-paced, online live Chats. Then they Ask the scientists all the questions they want to, and Vote for their favourite scientist to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public.
