For Scientists — long version

A STEM engagement competition for scientists

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here! is a competition for scientists, where students are the judges. Six scientists put up a profile on the website, answer questions and have live, online, text-based chats with school students across the UK. The students vote for their favourite scientist to get a prize of £500 to spend on further public engagement.

I’m a Scientist is by far the best public engagement activity I have been involved in. The set up allows everyone to have their chance to ask questions, whether they are the loudest person in the class, or the quiet curious student.

Suze Kundu, UCL

The I’m a Scientist activity is a unique, fun way of developing communication skills, gaining a fresh perspective on your research, and finding out what young people think about science and the role of scientists.

Everything happens online, so you can take part and reach hundreds of students without leaving your desk. The activity runs three times a year, and lasts for 2 weeks. Scientists who have taken part previously have said they usually spend about an hour in the live chats and an hour answering questions each day.

Apply now at: imascientist.org.uk/scientist-apply

You’ll be asked to fill in a ‘one sentence summary’ of your work — make this interesting and understandable to 13/14 year olds, as students and teachers will rate it to guide who gets in.

To find out more visit: imascientist.org.uk/scientists or contact Antony at antony@mangorol.la and on 01225 326892.

Science engagement activity

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here! is an online STEM engagement activity for school students. It’s a competition for scientists, where your students are the judges.

Students read the scientists’ profiles, ask them questions and have live, online, (text) chats with them. Students then get to vote for their favourite scientist to win a £500 prize to spend on science communication.

I’d ask a question, and they’d give me an answer, and then I’d have loads more questions, and then more.

Student, West Thames College

Taking part shows students the relevance of their learning and increases students’ confidence.Teachers can use the activity to increase participation in higher education, and as the activity takes place entirely online it’s great way to broaden horizons for students in deprived areas.

The activities run in November, March, and June every year. All teachers are sent a Teacher Pack with lesson plans to help introduce students to the activity and reduce the lesson planning required.
