Darwin Tree of Life activity Report March 2021 to July 2022

The Darwin Tree of Life activity ran from March 2021 to July 2022 and was funded by the Wellcome Trust.

The activity featured 8 teams of scientists working on the Darwin Tree of Life project with the goal of sequencing the genomes of all eukaryotic species in Britain and Ireland.

Scientists

37 scientists created profiles in the Zone.

Students

645 students from 41 schools logged into the Zone.

57% of active students were from priority schools. A school is considered priority if it is more than 30 minutes drive from the nearest HEI and has an above average percentage of students eligible for free school meals (above 14%)

Activity

The Zone was aimed at sixth-form students and encourage independent learning. Students were able to follow along with a species from acquisition to annotation, complete quizzes to deepen their understanding and connect with researchers working on the Darwin Tree of Life project.
