Health Zone Report July 2023

The Health Zone ran from June to July 2023 and was funded by the STEM Ambassadors scheme.

Scientists

The activity featured 53 STEM Ambassadors working as trainee genetic counsellors, bioinformaticians, laboratory analysts, research technicians in hospitals, microbiologists and project engineers to name a few.

Students

905 students from across England and Wales took part. 805 students (89%) actively participated by writing Chat lines and asking follow up questions. 69% of active students were from priority schools: 42% from underserved schools and 35% from widening participation schools

Live Chats

46 Chats were booked, 35 took place.

On average, 6 scientists took part in each Chat.

What is I’m a Scientist?

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here is an online activity where school students get to meet and interact with scientists.

It’s a competition between scientists, where the students are the judges.

Students challenge the scientists over intense, fast-paced, online live Chats. Then they Ask the scientists all the questions they want to, and Vote for their favourite scientist to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public.
