Genetics Zone report November 2022

The Genetics Zone ran from 7 November to 2 December 2022 and was funded by the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, Wellcome Connecting Science and Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics.

The activity featured 30 scientists working across a variety of fields.

30 scientists created profiles in the Zone. See who took part ❯

The winner of the Zone, who was Charli Corcoran, won £500 to deliver further STEM engagement activities.

Students

684 students from 32 schools logged into the Zone.

69% of active students were from priority schools: 41% from widening participation schools and 38% from underserved schools.

Live Chats

56 live Chats were requested and 41 live Chats took place.

On average, 4 scientists attended each live Chat.

What is I’m a Scientist?

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here is an online activity where school students get to meet and interact with scientists.

It’s a competition between scientists, where the students are the judges.

Students challenge the scientists over intense, fast-paced, online live Chats. Then they Ask the scientists all the questions they want to, and Vote for their favourite scientist to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public.
