– Georgia Brittain, Research Technician at Johnson Matthey
Georgia has been taking part in I’m a Scientist for 5 years while working as a research technician at Johnson Matthey.
Since she first took part in 2020, Georgia has connected with approximately 650 students at schools from Aberdeenshire to Devon, right from her desk. It’s a flexible and enjoyable way for her to volunteer, fitting easily around her work while making a real impact on students.
“I have enjoyed giving back through this platform. I would have loved a similar opportunity when I was in school – having the chance to ask working scientists questions, discover careers I never knew existed and learning the different routes people took to get there.”
Suits those with busy working lives
“
It’s like bite-sized volunteering which I can really tailor to when I have time to engage.
The online format works well with Georgia’s schedule. 30-minute sessions slot easily into her day. She can join Chats from the office and hop straight into conversations between lab tasks.
All the time Georgia puts towards I’m a Scientist is spent connecting with students. There’s no travel involved, and no need to plan events. When she’s busy or out of office, she “can choose days I won’t get Chat requests for, without having to sort through a full list.” The logistics are taken care of.
An enjoyable introduction to community outreach
For those looking to make an impact on the next generation in STEM, I’m a Scientist offers a simple, effective introduction. The activity is fully moderated – there’s always someone on hand to keep things running smoothly.
“
It was the first volunteering activity I saw – I instantly knew I wanted to get involved, and still enjoy engaging with it.
Georgia discovered I’m a Scientist during her first year with Johnson Matthey and got involved as her first foray into volunteering.
She’s since engaged a variety of students, from Year 5s all the way to college classes. Taking the lead from their questions, Georgia can practice adapting the information she gives to match the students’ level.
