An easy intro to public engagement for animal technicians

Jennifer took part in I’m a Scientist while working as a laboratory technician, caring for mice kept for medical research purposes.

She answered students’ questions about animal research and welfare, helping to build understanding about her role in medical research. One of Jennifer’s key takeaways was how receptive and positive students were about her role as an animal technician.

Student: Are you allowed to have a favourite mouse??

Jennifer: Yes, we all have our favourites. Mine is a brown mouse with a quiff of hair growing in the other direction on his head. His name is Elvis!

Student: He sounds really cute!!

While they had understandable questions about the necessity of animal testing, they were reassured by the care and ethical standards that govern her work. Many students also expressed appreciation for how well the mice are looked after.

Low-risk introduction to public engagement

The children were curious and they had few preconceived ideas, so being able to provide a positive introduction to animal research was particularly worthwhile.

For technicians interested in trying public engagement, I’m a Scientist offers a simple, low-risk introduction. Chats are moderated, so there is always someone on hand to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Jennifer particularly liked that she could choose which questions to respond to and how often she took part, keeping her in control of the experience.

Suits those with busy working lives

The flexible format worked well with Jennifer’s busy schedule. She could join Chats directly from the lab in 30-minute sessions that slotted easily into her day. Even when her availability changed, she was able to stay involved and connect with students when it suited her.
