Red Zone Report – April 2021

The Red Zone ran from 12 to 30 April 2021. The activity featured 28 scientists working across the UK, in a broad range of fields.

Psychology Zone Report March 2021

The Psychology Zone was a month-long event in March 2021 funded by the British Psychological Society that featured 25 psychologists from various psychology-related fields, 11 of whom were BPS members.

Nearly 900 students from 18 UK schools participated, with the majority being from underserved or widening participation schools. There were 46 live chats, including ones for school classes, open chats, and A-level student chats, with an average of five psychologists attending each chat.

Molecule Zone Report March 2021

The Molecule Zone was a chemistry themed zone held from 1 to 26 March 2021, featuring 33 scientists from various chemistry-related fields. The event was funded by ScotCHEM and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). Of the 33 scientists, 17 were from a ScotCHEM member university, and 15 were RSC members.

A total of 927 students from 26 schools across the UK participated in the event, with 62% of the active students being from target schools. A total of 57 live chats took place, with an average of five scientists attending each chat.

Pink Zone Report March 2021

The Pink Zone was a general science zone and ran from 1 to 26 March 2021, partially funded by the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC). It featured 27 scientists from various fields, including five who were either funded by STFC or worked at an STFC facility. The winner of the zone was Felicity Hunter, a medical science PhD student at the University of Manchester.

864 students from 23 schools participated in the zone, with 63% of active students coming from target schools. 66 live chats were held, with an average of 5 scientists attending each chat.

Purple Zone Report February 2021

The Purple Zone was general science zone from 1 to 26 February 2021 and was funded by the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC). The zone featured 24 scientists who either worked at an STFC facility or used data from one.

The activity had 878 students from 27 schools and 1 youth group participate, with 43% of active students from target schools. A total of 71 live chats were held, with an average of 4 scientists attending each school chat.

Planet Earth Zone Report January-February 2021

The Planet Earth Zone was funded by the Royal Institution from 11 January to 5 February 2021. The activity was themed around the Ri’s CHRISTMAS LECTURES 2020, “Planet Earth, a User’s Guide”. 43 scientists and lecture contributors took part in the activity, and 1,637 students from 27 schools across the UK logged into the Zone.

66% of active students were from underserved and widening participation schools. A total of 89 live chats took place during the activity, with an average of 5 scientists/lecture contributors attending each live chat. Additionally, 219 student questions were approved, and there were 278 answers provided.

Medical Research Zone Report November 2020

The Medical Research Zone was a part of I’m a Scientist: On Demand that ran from 2 to 27 November 2020. The Zone was funded by the Medical Research Council and featured 41 researchers and technical staff from various fields and career stages.

A total of 467 students from 20 schools in Great Britain and one from the USA participated, with 82% from target schools, 39% from widening participation schools, and 58% from underserved schools. There were 28 live Chats, and 58 student questions were approved, with a total of 109 answers provided.

Orange Zone Report – December 2020

The Orange Zone was a general science Zone that ran from 30 November to 18 December 2020, as part of I’m a Scientist: On Demand. It featured 31 scientists working in various fields, and was funded by the Wellcome Trust.

A total of 746 students from 21 schools participated, with 72% from target schools. 40 live Chats were held, with an average of 5 scientists attending each session. 179 student questions were submitted, resulting in 280 answers from the scientists.

Futures Zone Report – November-December 2020

The FUTURES Zone was a part of the European Researchers’ Night and was open to school students and researchers from South West England. 13 researchers from the University of Bristol created profiles in the Zone, and 8 researchers engaged with students through live Chats and Asked questions.

54 students from 3 schools logged into the Zone. The Zone had 4 live Chats, and on average, 4 scientists attended each live Chat session. 12 student questions were approved, and researchers responded with 10 answers.

Health Zone Report – November 2020

The Health Zone was part of I’m a Scientist: On Demand, running from 2 to 27 November 2020. It was jointly funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the British Society for Immunology. 50 scientists from various fields and career stages engaged with students through live Chats and Ask questions.

486 students from 23 schools across the UK participated, with 42% from target schools. 30 live Chats took place, and 44 student questions were approved, with scientists responding with 201 answers. Two of the weekly evening chats focused on vaccinations.

Physics Zone Report – November 2020

The Physics Zone was part of I’m a Scientist: On Demand in November 2020 and was funded by the Ogden Trust. 36 scientists participated and engaged with students from 20 schools.

616 students logged into the zone, with 70% of them from target schools. 34 live chats took place with an average of 5 scientists attending each session. 267 student questions were approved, and scientists responded with 535 answers.

Psychology Zone Report – November 2020

The Psychology Zone was a part of I’m a Scientist: On Demand, which offered greater flexibility to teachers in response to COVID-19. The British Psychological Society funded the Zone, which involved 41 psychologists from various fields and career stages engaging with 384 students from 17 schools across the UK.

There were 26 live Chat sessions, but there were 10 cancellations. Psychologists answered 217 approved student questions. 80% of active students were from target schools, and 39% were from widening participation schools.
